The German shepherd puppy was found on a beach in Alameda in a cardboard Heineken's box. She was about 10 weeks old and adorable. Why would anyone abandon such a lovely girl?
We soon found out. The puppy could not walk or even sit up, only lie flat on her tummy with legs splayed, like a little starfish.
It was heartbreaking to see her struggle to move. We rushed her to an emergency clinic where she was diagnosed with a terminal hereditary condition. "Her organs are so collapsed, we're surprised she can even still breathe," the veterinarian told us. We were advised to euthanize. Instead we decided to get a second opinion, and we're so glad we did. Starfish had swimmer's syndome, a completely curable condition.
Though still a puppy, Starfish was almost beyond rehabilitation due to her age. But we were determined to help her and enlisted the services of Holistic Veterinary Care in Oakland. The funds to rehabilitate her came from the generous supporters of Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter. Without your donations, we could not maintain our Angel Fund medical fund for sick and injured shelter animals.
